Square Enix, renowned for creating JRPG classics such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, has partnered with a prominent metaverse investment firm to develop its own crypto-powered NFT game.
In a recent announcement on Monday, the company revealed a collaboration with Animoca Brands aimed at enhancing marketing initiatives for “Symbiogenesis,” the game along with its set of 10,000 Ethereum-based NFTs.
Square Enix Meets Animoca Brands
Animoca Brands Japan has expressed its commitment to supporting the game by leveraging its expertise in expanding Japanese products globally, managing NFT sales, and fostering collaboration with Animoca’s existing portfolio companies.
“Animoca Brands Japan is thrilled to collaborate with SQUARE ENIX, an entertainment powerhouse renowned for delivering top-tier content and IP that Japan can take pride in,” stated Kensuke Amo, COO of Animoca Brands Japan.
Symbiogenesis emerges as a PC narrative adventure set in a “devastated high fantasy world,” where players immerse themselves in the roles of their Ethereum NFT avatars. Additionally, players can engage with other in-game NFTs generated on the leading Ethereum scaling network, Polygon. Ownership of an NFT is a prerequisite for accessing the Symbiogenesis game.
Set amidst a “floating continent” within a future Earth plagued by pollution, humans combat the onslaught of fantastical dragons in this gripping narrative. The game is slated to feature prominently in Animoca Brands Japan’s upcoming NFT launchpad, scheduled to debut this summer with support for Ethereum and Polygon networks.
Square Enix Loves Crypto
Square Enix and Animoca have a history of collaboration. In 2020, Square Enix led an investment round in the popular NFT game “The Sandbox,” which is owned by Animoca. This partnership led to the integration of characters and assets from Square Enix’s Dungeon Siege game into The Sandbox’s game-making tools.
Furthermore, Square Enix ventured into the world of NFTs on Polygon in 2022 with the launch of Final Fantasy VII-based NFTs. That same year, Square Enix invested $35 million in Zebedee, a Bitcoin gaming and payment platform.
Just last month, Square Enix announced investments in crypto-native PC launcher apps Hyperplay and Elixer Games.
Naoyuki Tamate, the producer of Symbiogenesis, expressed excitement about the partnership with Animoca, stating, “We are very excited about this initiative and look forward to working with Animoca Brands Japan to bring the Web3 experience to a wider audience in an even more strategic way.”
