Reddit has unveiled the Gen 4 Collectible Avatar series, marking its most substantial expansion to its exclusive non-fungible token (NFT) assortment.
Named “Retro Reimagined”, GEN 4 is now accessible in the Shop, as indicated by the announcement made on Wednesday.
The team highlighted, “With this being our largest release so far, expect to see many familiar faces, alongside some fresh ones in the Shop.”
These Collectible Avatars are distinctive digital items crafted by independent artists in collaboration with Reddit. They’re up for grabs at a set price in local currency, with a limited quantity available for each artist’s Avatars.
As detailed in the announcement, the collection exudes a sense of nostalgia with its “collectibles that invoke warm and cherished memories.”
The assortment showcases diverse renditions of Reddit’s iconic Snoo mascot, enriched with designs contributed by 100 distinct artists.
These vibrant NFTs, built on the Polygon platform, are tagged with prices ranging from $2.49 up to $199.99. The ones with the heftiest price tags stand out for their intricate details and complexity.
Potential buyers can also delve into a broad spectrum of themes and styles, each bearing the unique signature of the contributing artist.
However, the launch wasn’t devoid of hiccups. A glitch, predominantly affecting Android users, rendered the shop interface “wonky.” Some items weren’t accessible for purchase, and specific collectibles worth $99.99 were mistakenly priced at $9.99.
Gleaning insights from their past release, the team made notable adjustments for this Gen 4 launch.
One noteworthy change is the introduction of “initial access”: during the first day of the drop, the age of accounts and “other metrics” will be considered, and a restriction is set on the number of collectibles one can buy at once.
According to the announcement,
“These buying limits are designed to serve as an added barrier against malicious users and automated bots.”
To further fend off bots, they’ve incorporated measures like CAPTCHA.
Following the conclusion of the initial access phase, general access is granted. However, there’s a stipulated daily spending cap of $3,000 and a maximum of 3 purchases per Collectible Avatar.
The FAQ section also sheds light on added perks accompanying these avatars. When these are designated as Reddit avatars, users enjoy “a distinct profile presentation and a special comment appearance on posts.”
