Nigerian Court Dismisses Binance Exec’s Human Rights Lawsuit

On June 19, a Nigerian court dismissed a wrongful detention lawsuit filed by Nadeem Anjarwalla, a fugitive Binance executive. This decision came after the country withdrew tax charges against him but continued to detain the Binance compliance chief. According to a report by Punch News on June 20, Judge Inyang Ekwo rejected Anjarwalla’s claim, citing insufficient grounds for “diligent prosecution.”

During the hearing, Anjarwalla reportedly lacked legal representation. He and his colleague Gambaryan, a Binance regional manager, faced trouble with Nigerian authorities starting in late February of this year. They were accused of violating the country’s anti-money laundering laws, although questions about the legitimacy of these accusations have been raised.

Anjarwalla managed to evade capture in March and has been on the run since then, despite Nigerian authorities’ collaboration with INTERPOL in efforts to apprehend him.

Tigran Gambaryan In Worsening Health, Remains Imprisoned

On June 14, Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) formally dismissed the tax charges against the crypto executives, but charges brought by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are still pending.

Despite this development, Gambaryan remains in custody, reportedly suffering from declining health. His family and friends have petitioned for his release, citing harsh conditions in the detention facility.

“After collapsing in court on May 23rd due to malaria, Tigran’s health deteriorated further, leading to pneumonia,” noted a recent statement from Gambaryan’s family. “Despite a court order from Justice Emeka Nwite for immediate hospitalization, it took prison authorities 11 days to transfer him for a brief check-up. The prison has withheld the results from his family, lawyers, and the US embassy, naming a prison official as his next of kin.”

Earlier this month, members of the U.S. Congress urged President Joe Biden to take action for Gambaryan’s safe return.

“Mr. Gambaryan’s detention has been marked by severe and inhumane treatment,” the lawmakers’ letter emphasized. “Additionally, he is denied access to legal counsel without government officials and armed guards present.”

I want to save money. Will cryptocurrency work?

Cryptocurrency is essentially virtual money that operates in a decentralized manner, not through a bank but directly on multiple independent computers.

Every cryptocurrency has two main components: the units of digital exchange called “coins” and the network within which the exchange takes place. These units can be transferred between wallets and exchanged on exchanges. The networks in which these coins exist are called blockchains, which translates to “chains of blocks.”
