Following a $39M Airdrop, Optimism Says There is $2BN More to Come

Following the most recent airdrop, Layer 2 network Optimism reassured users not to fret, assuring them that more opportunities are on the horizon.

The announcement emphasized that additional airdrops are already in the works.

“Optimism has pledged to allocate 19% of the total initial token supply to the community through airdrops. With the expanding community of active users across the Superchain, there are ample opportunities for further distributions throughout the Superchain.”

According to the team, approximately 560 million OP tokens remain earmarked for future airdrops, equivalent to $2.12 billion based on the current price.

At the time of this writing, the OP token had experienced a 1% decline in the past 24 hours. According to CoinGecko, it is trading at $3.78.

It has seen a 1% increase over the course of a week and a notable 21% surge within a month. Over the past year, its price has appreciated by 45%.

In May 2022, Optimism launched Airdrop 1, distributing over 200 million OP tokens to 250,000 early adopters and active users. This was followed by the second and third airdrops in February and September 2023.

The most recent airdrop, Airdrop 4, allocated a total of 10,343,757.81 OP tokens to 22,998 addresses, valued at $39,099,405.

According to the announcement, this gesture serves as a token of appreciation to the artists for their ability to bring creativity onto the blockchain.

As outlined in the provided documentation, eligible creators were those who produced NFT art between January 10, 2023, and January 10, 2024, either on the Ethereum mainnet or Optimism’s Superchain, a network of interconnected Layer 2 networks.

Users have until February 13, 2025, to claim their tokens.

Notably, the distribution of tokens in this airdrop was based on the amount of gas users expended during the minting process or while trading NFTs. Consequently, the reward amount for creators was determined by the popularity of their art.

What we write about

I want to save money. Will cryptocurrency work?

Cryptocurrency is essentially virtual money that operates in a decentralized manner, not through a bank but directly on multiple independent computers.

Every cryptocurrency has two main components: the units of digital exchange called “coins” and the network within which the exchange takes place. These units can be transferred between wallets and exchanged on exchanges. The networks in which these coins exist are called blockchains, which translates to “chains of blocks.”
