Mike Schmidt complied with a subpoena by providing information regarding participants at a Bitcoin developer gathering associated with the inquiry into Luke Dashjr’s Bitcoin theft. Schmidt, who is the co-founder of Brink, disclosed in a social media update that he had received the subpoena from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), compelling him to furnish personal details of those who attended the CoreDev Atlanta event in October 2022.
FBI Demands Mike Schimdt’s Cooperation
Schmidt disclosed that the FBI had issued him the subpoena for cooperation approximately a year earlier. Due to a non-disclosure order, he could only publicly address the investigation once the order had lapsed.
“Some of you were invited and participated throughout the entire event, while others attended as guests for a portion of the time,” Schmidt remarked.
In compliance with the FBI subpoena, Mike Schmidt provided details regarding attendees at a developer event, pertaining to the investigation into the theft of Luke Dashjr’s Bitcoins.
“The original subpoena requested a significant amount of information,” Schmidt elaborated, “however, following objections, the FBI agent agreed to only the specified subset of details about you.”
In addition to disclosing the full names of event attendees, Schmidt also provided their GitHub usernames and email addresses as part of the investigation into Luke Dashjr’s reported theft of his bitcoins.
“I don’t possess any insights regarding the investigation’s specifics or whether the subpoena was targeted at a specific suspect or constituted general information gathering for the investigation,” Schmidt clarified.
In the post, Schmidt included a screenshot of the email he received, highlighting the irony of the situation, stating, “The individual advocating Bitcoin usage couldn’t safeguard his own Bitcoins and, consequently, inadvertently exposed everyone who attended a conference with him to FBI scrutiny.”
“Way to go, Luke!” he sarcastically remarked.
