Disney has revealed a collaboration with Dapper Labs, the creator of NBA Top Shot, to introduce a “digital pin” NFT platform named Disney Pinnacle. This platform will enable collectors to buy and trade Disney-branded NFTs, featuring beloved characters from Pixar and Star Wars, utilizing the Flow blockchain.
The aim of Disney Pinnacle is to create a socially driven collectible experience, bringing the tradition of pin collecting into the digital realm. According to a joint release on Dapper Labs’ website, the platform is designed to be an innovative product that incorporates lessons learned over recent years.
Roham Gharegozlou, co-founder and CEO of Dapper Labs, expressed that Disney Pinnacle is crafted from the ground up to offer a dynamic and secure way for fans worldwide to collect and trade digital pins instantly on their phones. This collaboration represents Disney’s foray into the growing market of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and blockchain-based collectibles.
Disney Pinnacle is scheduled to make its public debut later this year on the Apple App Store, catering to iOS users. Collectors can now join the waitlist to sign up for the platform.
The digital collectibles on Disney Pinnacle will evoke the feel of physical pins traditionally sold at Disney theme parks. These unique digital collectibles will be minted as NFTs on the Flow blockchain, the same network used by Dapper Labs for other collectibles platforms like NBA Top Shot and NFL All Day.
In an interview with Decrypt, Roham Gharegozlou, co-founder and CEO of Dapper Labs, revealed that beloved characters such as Buzz Lightyear and Woody from Toy Story, Disney Princesses, and Darth Vader from Star Wars are among those slated to be featured in the lineup of Disney Pinnacle’s digital collectibles.
However, it was clarified that Marvel, despite being owned by Disney, will not be part of the platform “at launch.” This collaboration signifies Disney’s entry into the NFT space, bringing its iconic characters into the digital collectibles realm.
Unlike NBA Top Shot, which began as a web-based platform before introducing a native mobile app, Disney Pinnacle has been specifically designed for mobile use from the outset. While there may be some similarities to Dapper Labs’ other NFT platforms, Roham Gharegozlou, CEO of Dapper Labs, underscored that Disney Pinnacle is optimized for smartphones and will feature enhancements to ensure a user-friendly experience.
Gharegozlou stated, “It’s an updated economy design, so it’s better balanced between the accessibility for the everyday fan as well as the limited edition and super limited edition assets for some of the higher-end collectors.” He also highlighted that Disney Pinnacle provides access to the entire Disney universe within one platform.
Dapper Labs, known for the success of NBA Top Shot and the Ethereum NFT project CryptoKitties, developed the Flow blockchain to handle large-scale consumer applications like collectibles and games. Disney’s entry into the NFT space through Disney Pinnacle follows its earlier collaboration with Cryptoys, where it released a collection of limited-edition NFT Star Wars toys in May.
