Celo’s developer has put forward a detailed plan to facilitate the selection of a Layer-2 technology provider, with the goal of making a final decision by January 2024.
The primary developer behind Celo, cLabs, has shared a “framework for selecting an L2 stack” on their discussion forum, inviting feedback from users. This framework delineates the criteria that will be used to choose a Layer-2 technology provider, a crucial aspect of Celo’s strategy to integrate with Ethereum’s network. The initiative by cLabs emphasizes community involvement in the decision-making process, and the selection is anticipated to be finalized by mid-January.
Key Features of Celo’s Proposed Layer-2 Framework
The framework outlined several core criteria and values, emphasizing Ethereum compatibility and heightened security for technical considerations, as well as a smooth migration process with minimal downtime for migration feasibility. Independence within the Ethereum ecosystem was also highlighted to ensure alignment with governance principles.
The post inviting community feedback stated, “We would love your input, suggestions, and feedback, to make this framework more reflective of all the priorities and concerns of Celo stakeholders. Right now, ‘we’ reflects cLabs’ views, but we hope as this doc evolves we can incorporate the general consensus of the whole community.” The intention is to refine the framework to better represent the collective priorities and concerns of the broader Celo community as it evolves.
cLabs expressed its openness to incorporating user suggestions if deemed suitable. The team acknowledged a slight delay in their internal timeline for decision-making but aimed to reach a general consensus on the framework by mid-December. Once this consensus is achieved, cLabs plans to commence the evaluation of each Layer-2 (L2) stack in accordance with the established framework.
To facilitate discussions and gather input, cLabs scheduled an L2 discussion call on December 13 at 4 pm (GMT) regarding the framework. The framework presented is an extension of cLabs’ initial proposal in July, where the L1 to L2 upgrade was introduced to promote financial inclusivity and contribute to the development of Web3 in the Ethereum ecosystem. In August, Celo announced a partnership with Google Cloud for the Ethereum L2 migration.
